A Navigation Aid for Blind People with Walking Disabilities
نویسندگان
چکیده
Many blind people require travel aids to navigate in unknown environments. However, the majority of the corresponding devices are not designed for people with walking disabilities. In this paper, we present a smart walker that does not only provide walking assistance but also enables blind users with mobility impairment to avoid obstacles. By leveraging existing robotics technologies, our system detects both positive and negative obstacles such as curbs, staircases and holes in the ground and transmits obstacle proximity information through haptic feedback. Initial experiments show that our smart walker enables human users to navigate safely in indoor and outdoor environments.

Navigating blind people with walking impairments using a smart walker
Navigation in complex and unknown environments is a major challenge for elderly blind people. Unfortunately, conventional navigation aids such as white canes and guide dogs provide only limited assistance to blind people with walking impairments as they can hardly be combined with a walker, required for walking assistance. Additionally, such navigation aids are constrained to the local vicinity...
متن کاملPersonal Adaptive Mobility Aid for the Infirm and Elderly Blind
This technical report describes ongoing research into the development of a robotic mobility aid (PAM-AID) for people with a visually impairment who also require support during walking. These disabilities coincide most often in the elderly and as the elderly constitute almost two thirds of all blind people (due to the fact that blindness occurs most often in the over 65's) we feel that this atte...

Objectives: The purpose of this study is to examine the use of assistive technology, social support in everyday life and psychological existential orientation for individuals with physical disabilities. Methods: Forty-six elderly persons with physical disabilities (aged 73.7±10.6 years, range 53-93 years) were examined with regard to the use of assistive technology, social support...

In this paper we present a system that could be used to help people with walking disabilities. A system consists of a prototype mobile robot platform equipped with a control board and a remote computer system, running with image processing algorithms, was used to develop a system for physically disabled human to move freely in an environment. We used a camera to get visual information by a huma...
